In October 2024, the Australian Federal Government launched the Mandatory Guardrails consultation in response to its earlier Safe and Responsible AI consultation.

The Mandatory Guardrails consultation proposed a set of core principles to identify high-risk AI systems. It also outlined ten mandatory guardrails intended to apply broadly to all AI models, systems, developers, and implementers.

The government invited public feedback to inform next steps, including how to best apply the proposed guardrails.
